Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

SeAH Besteel has reportedly increased process efficiencies at its electric arc furnace No. 3 at the Gunsan meltshop in Korea by managing electric power and oxygen timing in the refining stage.

Dense scrap charge mixes are made to meet steel quality targets in furnace No. 3. To avoid over-oxidation, SeAH Besteel installed the Q-melt technological package from Danieli. Increased productivity and process improvements were achieved through real-time gas analysis, electrode control regulator, and dynamic adaptation of oxygen flow rates. Benefits include a 15pc standard deviation decrease of oxygen content in the steel before the tapping process, a 2pc decrease of electrical energy consumption, and an increase of 2pc in active power.

SeAH Besteel is the largest special steelmaker in South Korea with its components used in the automotive, construction, industrial, and energy industries. It holds a 40.7pc share in the domestic South Korean special steel market. The company produces more than 3mn mt annually of standard rolled and forged materials annually. The large-scale special steel mill in Gunsan annually produces over 2.6mn of crude steel with 2.2mn mt of finished steel products. Along with the Gunsan plant, SeAH Steel also has a plant in Changnyeong.
