South Africa’s mining production in April increased by 116pc compared to the prior year. The mining index rose backed by higher iron ore production, jumped 149pc. Other major contributing minerals were gold and manganese ore. Increased output by Platinum Group Metals also aided the rise, according to the StatsSA data on June 10.

 

From a month ago, however, production only recorded a marginal rise of 0.3pc. In Jan-April, production rose 20.2pc from the prior-year period.

 

Iron ore production volume fell 5.2pc in April from March levels, while the index for copper production slipped 13.9pc. Nickel production in April was up 2pc from a month ago.

 

In April, iron ore production rose 149.1pc from 2020 levels. Copper production surged 662.7pc, while nickel production rose 575pc from April 2020.

 

Mineral sales have increased by 152pc in April from 2020 levels.
