SSAB plans to stop using fossil energy completely the use of fossil energy and has launched a research project named FFS- towards fossil-free steel in Finland.

 

The company will partner with various industrial and research partners and aims to remove CO2 emissions by 2045. SSAB is already a part of the HYBRIT initiative where LKAB, SSAB, and Vattenfall use electric arc furnace technology using direct reduced iron to decrease around 90pc of CO2 emissions. 

 

Now the FFS project will further help SSAB in transitioning towards fossil-free steel by using renewable energy for steel making on which the company plans to invest €10.7mn, it said in a statement. 

 

The amount of steel to be produced under this new project is not disclosed yet.
