US export of stainless steel and alloy steel scrap dropped by 68pc to 61,952mt in June from 199,136mt in the same month last year, according to the US Census Bureau. Import of stainless steel scrap and alloy steel in June fell by 22pc to 48,791mt from 62,907mt in June 2019.
India remained a key consumer of US stainless scrap with shipments to the country pegged at 6,761mt in June, even though they have from 13,659mt in June last year. Taiwan imported 5,168mt of US stainless scrap in June, down by almost 17pc from 6,174mt in the same month in 2019. Stainless steel exports to Canada, however, rose by 60pc to 4,662mt from 1,888mt during the same period under comparison. Exports to Pakistan also surged by 60pc in June 2020 to 1,036mt from 418mt in June 2019.
In terms of imports, stainless steel scrap shipments from Canada to the US rose by 14pc to 8,485mt in June from 7,291mt in the same month last year. Imports into the US from Mexico declined by just 3pc to 6,064mt in June from 6,283mt in June 2019. Stainless steel imports from Japan fell by 63pc to 46mt from 125mt during the same period under comparison.
