US-based steelmaker Steel Dynamics has acquired scrap processing company Zimmer to source raw materials to its new Texas flat roll steel mill scheduled to commence operations in mid-2021, stated a company release on August 3. 

Through the acquisition, Steel Dynamics aims to expand commercial presence in the region and strengthen raw material supply with cost-effective ferrous scrap procurement for the Texas unit. 

Zimmer is headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico and operates a ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals recycling business with six scrap processing units. The company also operates several third-party scrap processing locations with a combined processing capacity of 2mn gt annually and ships almost 500,000gt.

Meanwhile, Steel Dynamics’ Columbus arm rolled out its first coil with a new continuous galvanising line 3 as per schedule on July 9, 2020. The project involved equipment delivery from several countries experiencing different forms of COVID-19 related lockdown, namely France, Spain, Czech Republic, Italy, Mexico and the USA, cited media reports.
