Dutch automaker Stellantis has announced production at its Sevel plant in Italy be halted next week due to the ongoing semiconductor shortage, according to local media. The plant produces light commercial vehicles.
Various carmakers, dependent on electronic components, are facing stiff competition from the consumer electronics industry for the delivery of semiconductors due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has disrupted supply chains.
National union Fiom-Cgil said it had been told the shortage of chips would affect other plants of Stellantis, starting with that in Sevel.
Additionally, the union said, production at the Pomigliano site of Stellantis was expected to restart but remained halted.
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares had previously warned, the semiconductor shortage could extend till next year.
