Sumitomo Corporation has resumed nickel production at its Ambatovy mine in Madagascar on Mar 23, after a year of stoppage.

Masayuki Hyodo, chief executive officer, noted that the company also plans to ramp up production and will continue monitoring the COVID-19 situation in Madagascar. The miner had shut down its Ambatovy and Minera San Cristobal, Bolivia facilities in March 2020 due to the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns in South America and East Africa.

Ambatovy’s projected nickel production capacity is 60,000mt per year, though Sumitomo has yet to disclose revised guidance.
