Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

India’s Tata Steel Mining and Jindal Stainless Steel have agreed to mine chromite ore jointly at a facility in Odisha, India.

Both companies will seek statutory approvals to begin operations individually but have agreed to exploration and mining terms since the ore was discovered in a unit that has shared borders between the two companies’ mines.

Neither Tata Steel Mining (TSML) nor Jindal Stainless Steel (JSL) have disclosed more information about the memorandum of understanding (MoU). However, representatives of both entities stated to the media on Jul 20 that the project aims to enhance chromite ore availability in the Sukinda, Jajpur district region of India. The material is useful in steelmaking, chrome plating, and alloying.

TSML is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Steel with interests in ferroalloys and the development of commercial mining. JSL is a steel manufacturer with a current annual capacity of 1.1mn mt.
