Ternium plans to add 600,000mt to its steel production in H2 2021, thanks to the commissioning of its hot flat steel mill in Pesquería, Mexico, the company informed in its semi-annual financial report.

 

In the first half of this year, Ternium reported a 13pc increase in steel shipments, to 6.1mn mt from 5.4mn mt shipped in the same period of 2020. In Q2 2021 shipments grew by 25pc, to 3mn mt from 2.4mn mt in the second quarter of the previous year.

 

The steelmaker’s domestic shipments increased by 22pc in H1 2021, to 3.4mn mt from 2.8mn mt in the first half of 2020. Shipments to the rest of South America jumped by 74pc to 1.2mn mt from 723,000mt in the same timeframe.

 

However, iron ore shipments declined by 2pc in the first half of the year, to 1.94mn mt from 1.98mn mt. The downward trend continued in Q2 2021 with a decrease of 9pc, to 906,000mt from 991,000mt in the same period a year ago.

 

Ternium’s net sales jumped by 78pc in the first half of 2021, to $7.1bn from $4bn between January and June last year. In the second quarter, net sales increased by 125pc to $3.9bn from $3.2bn in the same year-ago period.
