The Delhi Transport Department has issued a public notice to owners of old vehicles to keep their vehicles off the road and get them scrapped under the vehicle scrappage policy.

Under Vehicle Scrappage Policy launched recently; the center has allowed automated fitness tests for personal and commercial vehicles after 20 years and 15 years, respectively. Owners of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years were notified to scrap their vehicles to control the city’s air pollution levels. Authorities have advised the owner to get their old vehicles scrapped through authorized scrap centers of the transport department.

In August, PM Modi launched the National Automobile Scrappage Policy. The policy aims to build scrapping infrastructure in the form of Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RSVF) and Automated Testing Stations (ATS) in India.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) stated mandatory fitness testing for heavy commercial vehicles will come into force from April 1 2023, and the same will be implemented for other categories from June 1 2024.
