Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe has placed an order with Danieli for two new walking-beam furnaces at its Duisburg plant in Germany to improve its premium steel sheet quality.

The furnaces will reheat steel slabs at 380mt per hour (cold-charging) to feed hot strip mill #4 at the plant. In hot-charging mode, the furnaces can operate at a capacity of 560mt per hour. The system has been optimized for up to 66pc use of hydrogen gas, which will help in reducing carbon emissions by 53kg (117lbs) per tonne of steel produced, Danieli said in a statement on Friday.

In October last year, thyssenkrupp ordered a similar furnace for hot strip mill #2 at the Duisburg plant. The plant has a combined crude steel production capacity of 12mn mt per year.
