Kaptan Iron & Steel (Demir Çelik) is installing a new wire rod system at its Marmara Ereğlisi, Turkey plant to increase steel production.
The new mill is expected to be commissioned in mid-2022 and will serve both the Turkish domestic market and export demand. An exact annual capacity of the new mill has not been provided by management, though it said in a statement that the new mill will roll 105mt of steel per hour at speeds of 75-110mt per second.
The increase in mill speed and load separating forces will help productivity and reduce operational costs per unit produced, the company noted. Kaptan will produce rebar from 6-20mm and carbon products from 4.5-26mm. The addition will expand Kaptan’s product assortment to include coiled rebar, low-alloy fine-grain rebar, welding wire, stainless steel, and cold heading grades.
Primetals will supply a flexible rod reducing and sizing mill, pinch roll and high-speed laying head, conveyors, water management systems, electrical system, automation software, shears, coil handling equipment, and a compactor for this project.
Kaptan’s first rolling mill was established in 1964 in Marmara. Products include billets and a variety of longs products such as rebar, bars, profiles, and flat steels. The Kaptan Group has investments in iron and steel production, shipping, port operations, transportation, energy, mining, recycling, and shipbuilding.
