Pig iron imports to Turkey decreased by 18pc to 503,000mt in January-May 2020 from the same period last year as crude steel production declined.

 

Crude steel output in Turkey dropped by 5.6pc in the first five months of 2020 to 13.50mn mt, according to Turkish Steel Producers Association. This decline had a negative impact on pig iron imports. Pig iron availability was also limited during the period under review.

 

The CIS region remained a key pig iron supplier to Turkey during the period under review, according to Turkish statistical source SteelData. Although, supply of the material from Russia decreased by 47pc to 237,000mt, it increased from Ukraine by 62pc to 132,000mt.

 

Turkey’s pig iron imports from Germany, Brazil, and Canada stood at 67,000mt, 58,000mt and 10,000mt, respectively, during the first five months of the year, according to SteelData.
