The Ukrainian government has decided to extend an export duty of €58/mt on ferrous scrap for five years.
The decision was supported by 291 representatives of the Ukrainian parliament on Apr 27. The duty was launched in Ukraine in 2016 and was increased gradually from €10/mt to €58/mt as local steelmakers claimed a shortage of the material.
In January-March 2021, Ukraine exported 49,000mt of ferrous scrap, of which 92pc was shipped to Turkey, according to customs data.
