The German Steel Federation (WV Stahl) has urged the European Union Commission to strengthen protection measures against unfair steel imports into Europe to make the Green Steel production in the region a success.

The steel industry in Europe contributes close to 30pc of industrial emissions and there needs to be a uniform change in the production processes across the steel industry to achieve climate neutrality, WV Stahl said in a statement.

Hans Jürgen Kerkhoff, the president of WV Stahl called on the council of the EU Commission’s trade ministers to create a plan of action for the European steel industry during a meeting between the ministers of economic affairs and the EU trade ministers in Berlin on September 21. Kerkhoff stressed that European steelmakers could succeed with the current carbon neutrality goals imposed by the EU only if the playing field was leveled with fair competition conditions for international players who exported steel to Europe.
