US ferrous scrap exports declined by 4pc in October to 1.41mn mt from 1.47mn mt in the same month last year, according to US Census Bureau data.
In January-October, US ferrous exports rose by 1pc to 13.3mn mt from 13.1mn mt through the first 10 months of last year. Turkey’s imports of US ferrous scrap during this period stood at 3.5mn mt, up 16pc from the same period last year. Malaysian imports doubled in the same period, tallying at 1.3mn mt, from 695,761mt in the prior-year period. Bangladesh also saw a 53pc increase in imports to 1.2mn mt, compared with 787,558mt during the same period under review.
October
Shipments from the US to Bangladesh, the third-largest importer in October, rose three-fold to 200,068mt on an annual basis. Turkey continued to be the largest importer, with shipments to the destination growing by 9pc to 365,237mt of ferrous scrap. Mexico was the second-largest importer, accepting 250,312mt from the US, up 43pc from October 2019. However, the combined shipments to other destinations during the period under review fell to 388,123mt from 776,940mt, the data indicated.
East Coast
East coast ferrous scrap exports amounted to 718,366mt in October, almost double from 487,486mt in the previous month.
West Coast
West coast ferrous scrap exports tallied at 416,021mt in October, rising from 352,359mt in the previous month.
North America
Canada imported 28,839mt of US ferrous scrap in October, up from September’s 18,249mt. Meanwhile, Mexico’s imports increased to 250,312mt compared with 175,251mt in the same period last year.
In the year till Oct, the US exported 637,6788mt of ferrous scrap to Canada, a rise of 22pc from 521,733mt in the first 10 months of 2019. Mexico imported 1.39mn mt in January-October, up 17pc from 1.19mt in the prior year.
