US ferrous scrap exports declined by 2pc in February to 1.3mn mt from 1.32mn mt in the prior year, according to the US Census Bureau data.
Mexico emerged as the largest importer in terms of volume, with a 75pc increase in February 2021 shipments to 275,308mt from 156,393mt in the same month last year. Exports to Turkey increased by 29pc to 284,444mt, from 221,113mt in February 2020. The demand for US ferrous scrap surged in Vietnam, with February exports to the country increasing by 94pc to 105,307mt from 54,284mt in the same month last year.
Coasts
Ferrous scrap exports from the East Coast amounted to 456,603mt, down from 521,065mt, in January. The West Coast shipped 367,621mt of scrap up from 245,171mt in the same timeframe.
North America
Canada imported 25,717mt of US ferrous scrap in February, down 52pc from 53,653mt in the prior month, while Mexico’s imports grew by 64pc annually to 471,758mt.
In the first two months of the year, the US exported 101,591mt of ferrous scrap to Canada, a decline of 8pc from 110,963mt in January-February 2020. Mexico imported 478,751mt, a 64pc increase from 287,327mt in the same period.
