US scrap imports of stainless and alloy steel rose by 30pc in October to 81,199mt from 62,349mt in the same month in 2019, according to latest data from the US Census Bureau. Alternatively, exports of stainless and alloy steel declined by 20pc to 72,289mt in October from 90,332mt a year ago.
The US accepted 10,331mt of Canadian stainless scrap in October, up from 9,520mt in the same month last year. Imports from Mexico also saw an increase to 10,658mt in October compared to 9,251mt in October 2019.
The largest volumes of stainless steel scrap were shipped to India, amounting to 13,388mt, down from 14,004mt in October 2019. Exports to Taiwan were almost halved to 4,196mt in October, compared to 7,938mt in October last year. US stainless steel exports to Canada in October stood at 2,552mt, falling slightly from 2,837mt in October last year, while exports to Pakistan dropped significantly to 618mt from 2,677mt during the same period under comparison.
