US Steel has acquired a majority interest in high-strength steel patents held by NanoSteel Company, becoming the sole owner and producer of those grades for the heavy industry and automotive sector.
NanoSteel has designed, developed and patented iron alloys which, due to their nano-scale structure, are extremely strong while also being as flexible as mild steel grades which are usually low strength.
According to a statement by US Steel, the NanoSteel grades are the most formable, high-strength steel grades in the world and can be rolled thicker than comparable alloys. However, the company did not disclose the volumes it plans to produce for these grades.
David B Burritt, president and chief executive officer, US Steel, noted that the NanoSteel grades complimented the company’s proprietary 980 XG3 offerings and are now being made available commercially for the first time.
