Volkswagen’s Spanish arm SEAT plans to open a battery assembly unit near its manufacturing plant in Martorell outside Barcelona. The new unit will help SEAT produce over 500,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in 2026.
Wayne Griffiths, chairman of Volkswagen, confirmed on Monday that SEAT plans to launch its first urban EV car model in 2025 after which, it will go ahead with full-scale production in 2026.
Spain’s industry minister noted on Mar 4 that the country will use funds from the European Union to create a public-private consortium with SEAT for an EV battery plant. But the location was not disclosed at that time.
Spain is due to receive pandemic recovery funds of about €140bn ($166.98 bn) in 2023 from the EU.
