Global alumina production increased by 1pc to 10.5mn mt in February from a year ago, according to the International Aluminum Institute. During the first two months of 2021, alumina volumes increased by 2.5pc to 2.23mn mt compared to the prior-year period.
Output in China increased by 4pc to 5.6mn mt in February compared with 5.4mn mt in the same month last year. Production in Oceania fell by 4pc to 1.55mn mt from 1.6mn mt last February. Production in Asia and Africa, excluding China, increased by 5.7pc to 1.02mn mt from 970,000mt in the same period under comparison.
Alumina production fell by 22pc in North America to 178,000mt in February against 217,000mt in the prior-year period. During the same timeframe, South America’s output fell by 2pc to 965,000mt while West Europe’s production declined by 3.4pc to 439,000mt. Meanwhile, East and Central Europe produced 1pc less alumina in February at 359,000mt. Unreported output in the rest of the world remained constant at 399,000mt.
