Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) announced that it ramped up the first batch of production at its new Al Taweelah alumina refinery to its full capacity of 2mn mt per annum.
The plant achieved this milestone in 14 months from April 2019 when it started producing alumina, EGA noted in a press release on Wednesday.
Zaher Alhabtari, executive vice president, upstream and capital projects, EGA, said that the company now aims to produce alumina at full scale for three consecutive months. According to the release, the plant’s production will represent 40pc of the company’s total output and will replace imports to an extent.
The plant is worth $3.3bn and currently employs 589 workers. The plant will utilize the Khalifa port of Abu Dhabi to import bauxite using Capesize vessels (150,000mt and above capacity), the company said in its media statement.
