Dastur International received funding from the US Department of Energy (USDOE) for the design and engineering of a carbon capture solution for a large integrated US-based steelmaker with blast furnaces. Dastur will also work with ION Clean Energy and the University of Texas Austin’s Geoscience department towards the carbon project. The press release did not disclose the award amount.

The objective is to design a system that would cost near $45/mt for the capture and disposition of carbon emissions compared to the present $60-100/mt levels. This translates to savings of 25-55pc compared to prevailing solutions for carbon capture.

USDOE’s project will facilitate the production of low-carbon emissions steel through carbon dioxide capture of up to 2mn mt annual capacity consumption from the blast furnace gases. The process will provide a hydrogen-rich gas stream to incorporate into the energy sourcing infrastructure of the steel plant.

Dastur’s funding is associated with the Biden Administration’s 2030 Greenhouse Gas Pollution Reduction Target. The company has recently designed commercial-scale carbon capture solutions in the oil and gas industry. The pilot is local, but once the solution is developed, Dastur will market the new product to mills with large blast furnaces worldwide.
