UAE-based Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has extended its alumina supply contract with Vietnam’s state-owned firm Vinacomin until 2023. Under this agreement, EGA will continue to buy up to 300,000mt of alumina from Vinacomin every year. This deal is an extension of an agreement signed by the two companies in 2017 which was due to expire at the end of this year.

 

Alumina is a significant components of UAE-Vietnam trade. EGA and Viacomin are jointly exploring ways to improve Vietnam’s port infrastructure and participate in other upstream opportunities in the country. 

 

Al Taweelah refinery

EGA’s Al Taweelah alumina refinery is expected to reach sustained production at nameplate capacity in the first half of 2020. Post-ramp-up, the refinery will produce 2mn mt alumina annually and meet 40pc of EGA’s alumina requirements. Bauxite for the plant is supplied from Guinea. EGA will continue to import alumina for rest of its operations.
