Germany’s new car registration from January to May 2021 dropped by 13pc to 1.1 million units compared to the same period in 2020, according to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). 

 

In May alone, the new vehicle registration grew by 37pc to 230,600 units compared to the corresponding month last year. 

 

Vehicle exports from Germany in the five-month period saw a 26pc increase to 1.13 million units annually while in May alone, exports rose by 75pc to 177,700 units compared to May 2020, VDA stated. 

 

The country’s production of new vehicles from January to March 2021 was up by 25pc to 1,4 million units compared to the same months in 2020 while the production grew by 58pc to 250,100 units in May from the same month last year. 

 

Electric vehicles accounted for 23.4pc of the total market share, VDA stated. Registration of EV in May was up by 337.9pc to 54,000 units. Registration of battery electric vehicles (BEV) surged by 381pc and registration of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) saw a 303pc rise.
