Ghana is looking for investment from the African Development Bank (AfDB) in an integrated aluminium industry project, according to vice president of Ghana, Mahamudu Bawumia. Ghana has 960mn mt estimated bauxite reserves; it has the second largest bauxite deposit in African countries besides Guinea.
This project aims at mining bauxite deposits at Nyinahin and Kibi located in the Eastern region of Ghana and to establish a refinery. The refined alumina will be supplied to smelting facility at Tema, run by state-owned Valco to produce downstream linkage industries. The project will substitute 400,000mt imported alumina and the additional 600,000mt will be sold to local rolling mills and extrusion plants.
