Davis Index – Daily metal prices, scrap prices & global metal market

European mining and metals conglomerate Glencore plans to restart the copper operations at its Mutanda facility in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by 2022.

Ivan Glasenberg, chief executive, had suspended activity at the facility in 2019 following rising taxes and increasing costs, according to media reports on Wednesday.

The company hasn’t disclosed how many lines it plans to start, but media reports estimate that resuming Mutanda production may ease the global shortage of copper and potentially cap rising prices of the red metal.

Mutanda produced 103,200mt of copper in 2019 compared with 199,000mt the year before.
