Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Automaker Honda Motor Co. produced 318,832 units globally in February, up 10pc compared to February 2020. Production in Japan slipped 34pc to 47,158 units in February from previous year. Production outside Japan was up 24pc to 271,674 units in February from 2019 levels.

 

Production in China was up 15-folds to 90,819 units manufactured in February from just 5,700 units produced in the year prior. Asian (except China) production reached 134,135 units in February, a jump of 156pc from the year prior. 

 

USA produced 77,345 units, down 22pc from the previous year while production in North America (excluding USA) fell 17pc to 121,237 units. Production dip in Europe was 2pc to 7,734 units from the prior year. 

 

Sales

Total Honda sales in Japanese market fell 14pc to 54,227 units in February from 2020 levels. This is the first time decrease in a period of five months. Total exports from Japan dipped for the third consecutive month. Exports were reported at 2,170 units, down 74pc from the prior year. Exports to all regions including North America, Asia and Europe has taken a strong hit. 

 

Production has weakened for major car and auto manufacturers owing to the shortage of semiconductors globally. This has resulted in erratic halting of production for several auto manufacturing units, however temporarily, as supply side constraints continue to extend.
