The government of India has added Kattupali, Chennai to the list of ports where metallic scrap can be admitted from countries and regions considered safe, without pre-shipment inspection certificate (PSIC). India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification to this effect recently.
Canada, United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia are source countries considered to be safe. As per DGFT’s 2018 notification, metal exports from these five countries do not contain harmful material such radioactive materials or waste.

Other Indian ports which can admit imports without PSIC include Chennai, Tuticorn, Kandla, JNPT, Mumbai, Krishnapatnam and Mundra. The consignments, however, needs to be accompanied by certification that it does not contain any radioactive materials/explosives. The material will be subject to radiation and explosive checks at these designated ports.
