UK corporate moghul Sanjeev Gupta’s Liberty House is mulling taking over Alco’s smelter in San Ciprian. Davis Index had reported that Alcoa is planning to lay off a smelter in San Ciprian in May this year. The recent media reports suggested that Liberty House, a part of CFG Alliance, expressed their interest in acquiring the San Ciprian aluminium smelter.
Recently, Davis Index also reported that the company failed to reach an agreement with the workers’ union at the end of its consultation period.
San Ciprian has an annual capacity to produce 228,000mt of primary aluminium. The plant’s operations were marred due to high energy costs and subdued aluminium prices due to global overcapacity.
Liberty’s aluminium division owns and operates the only remaining aluminium smelter in the UK, Liberty British Aluminium located at Fort William, Scotland. Other than this, Liberty has another smelter in Dunkerque, France having the capacity to produce 284,000mt of primary aluminium.
