Russian iron ore and HBI producer, Metalloinvest presented its strategy to produce “clean steel” at a conference recently.

The company aims to reduce its environmental impact significantly and produce iron ore, which is currently within the range of 65pc iron content and less than 5pc silica in it, to 67.5pc iron content and less than 1.5pc silica content, it said in a statement.

For the production of direct reduced iron (DRI) and hot briquetted iron (HBI) the firm recently launched a new product where the iron content is as high as 68pc while other impurities are very low. This new product has helped the iron ore producer to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60pc and has an energy saving of up to 50pc.

Metalloinvest indicated that these measures are helping the firm to increase the use of DRI for steelmaking as opposed to using scrap metal, thereby significantly reducing its environmental impact.
