US steelmaker Nucor plans to reduce energy consumption and costs through a water treatment plant at its upcoming plate mill in Brandenburg, Kentucky.


The company has contracted Spanish engineering services provider Russala to provide the electrical equipment and engineering services for a water treatment plant to achieve this goal.


Russala indicated in a statement on Tuesday that the agreement includes the supply of civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering for that section of the plate mill along with electronic and control equipment.


Nucor is investing $1.35bn in the Kentucky mill, which is due to come online by the end of 2022, with an estimated annual production of 1.2mn mt of plate products and a staff of 400 full-time employees. The water treatment plant at the mill is aimed to help reduce energy consumption and costs at the Brandenburg plant.
