Zinc production in Peru increased 66.6pc between January and May 2021, compared to the same period last year, to 661,876mt from 397,214mt, the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines reported today.


Last year, with the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the Peruvian mining sector saw its productivity decrease, but it has already begun to recover and zinc production in May of this year exceeded by 386pc, to 142,496mt from 29,325mt in the same month last year.


Copper is also trending upward, with January-May production exceeding that of the same period in 2020 by 17pc, to 900,209mt from 768,490mt. In May, the increase was 52.6pc to 195,999mt from 128,412mt in the previous year.


Lead production increased 30pc to 108,389mt in the first five months of 2021, compared to 83,234mt in the same period of 2020. This May, it exceeded 2020 production by 159pc, to 22,774mt from 8,772mt.


Peru’s iron ore output doubled to 4.9mn mt in January-May 2021 compared to 2.4mn mt in the same period last year. Production of this commodity came to a complete halt in May 2020 but resumed this May with output at 1.06mn mt.
