Rio Tinto is cutting 5pc of aluminum output at its Arvida plant in Jonquière, Québec.

The decision to reduce production by 8,000mt comes on the heels of weak demand and other challenges in the aluminum sector, the company noted. Moreover, about 100 pre-cooked tanks were shutdown for maintenance during the pandemic and will not be operational at least until the end of the year, as the company looks to ramp down production in a bid to remain competitive and meet the low demand in the North American market.

The production cut is not believed to result in job losses, though a prolonged slump could change that, according to local media reports.
