State-owned steelmaker Steel Authority of India (Sail) is expecting an order for 1.5mn mt of rails from Indian Railways. According to a Davis Index source in the company, Sail is likely to receive this order by March end for rails to be supplied in FY2020-21.

Sail already is in the process of completing Indian Railways’ previous order of 1.3mn mt rails for FY2019-2020 (April 2019-March 2020).

The company’s Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) produced 923,000mt of UTS 90 prime rails in the Apr-Dec 2019 period, its highest ever output.

In FY2018-19, Sail had supplied 968,000mt of rails against the total demand for 1.4mn mt in India. The company has recently ramped up its production capacity at Universal rail mill at BSP to 1.2mn mt to cater to increasing demand for rail roads.
