Effective Jan 1, 2020, the Turkish government increased rebar import duty to 30pc from 10pc and repealed the 2pc duty on pig iron, according to the country’s Official Gazette.
Turkish mills primarily produce rebar, and in raising the duty by 20pc, the government has indicated an effort to insulate a domestic market struggling with low demand.
Pig iron serves as important feedstock for Turkey’s steelmakers, especially for its flat steel producers. The country imports around 1mn mt of pig iron per annum, mainly from Russia and Ukraine.
