Ukraine’s pig iron exports increased in the first six months of 2020 amid sustainable demand for the material.

The country’s pig iron exports increased by 22.8pc in H1 2020 to 1.469mn mt from the same period last year, according to Ukrainian customs. More than half of the material (56pc) was shipped to the US, 20.6pc went to China, and 7.7pc was exported to Turkey. China has increased its pig iron imports from Ukraine this year although it did not import the material from this CIS region last year.

Ukraine exported 267,000mt of pig iron in June 2020, up by 78.5pc compared to the same month last year.

Pig iron production in Ukraine totaled 9.977mn mt in January-June 2020, decreasing from 10.248mn mt produced in the same period in 2019, according to Ukrmetalurgprom data. The decline is a result of a number of measures against COVID-19’s spread at Ukrainian mills.
