US raw steel production for the week ending Jan 18, 2020 totaled 1.9mn nt (1.7mn mt) with a capability utilization rate of 82.7pc, according to figures released by the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI).

 

That’s a 3pc increased over the week ending Jan 18, 2019 when production amounted to 1.9mn nt and the capability utilization rate was 80.4pc. Production for the week ending Jan 18, 2020 is up 0.3pc over the week ending Jan 11, 2020, when production was 1.9mn nt and the capability utilization rate was 82.5pc.

 

Between Jan 1, 2020 and Jan 18, 2020, production has totaled 5mn nt with a capability utilization rate of 82.3pc, which is a 2.6pc increased over the same period of time in 2019 when 4.8mn nt of raw steel was produced in the US, and the capability utilization rate was 80.4pc.

 

For the week ending Jan 18, 2020, the Southern district of the US produced 730,000nt of raw steel, followed by the Great Lakes at 686,000nt, the North East at 216,000nt, the Midwest at 208,000nt, and the Western US at 88,000nt.

 

The capability for Q4-2019 was approximately 30.4mn t, slightly below the 30.8mn t during the same quarter in 2018, and marginally below the 30.6mn t during Q3-2019.

 

The raw steel production tonnage in the AISI report is estimated, with 50pc of domestic producers provided data, and the rest coming from monthly production data.
