US stainless steel and alloy steel scrap exports fell in January by 45pc to 67,723mt from 122,641mt a year before, according to the US Census Bureau trade data. Scrap imports of stainless steel and alloy steel into the US also declined by 11pc to 64,757mt in January from 72,718mt in January 2019.
Canada was the largest importer of US stainless steel scrap in January. The US exported 11,424mt of stainless scrap to its North American neighbor in January, down by almost 50pc from 22,685mt exported in January 2019. Exports to India increased by 41pc to 10,631mt in January from 6,358mt a year ago, while exports to Taiwan fell by 38pc to 7,773mt in January from 12,466mt during the same month last year. US stainless steel exports to China increased by almost 84pc in January to 125mt from 21mt a year ago.
US Stainless steel exports to Japan were up by 52pc to 443mt from 217mt in January of the previous year, while exports to Malaysia rose by 68pc to 876mt from 285mt in January 2019. Exports to Pakistan increased by 65pc to 2,229mt in January from 796mt during the same month last year. Exports to South Korea, on the other hand, decreased by 74pc to 300mt from 1,141mt in January 2019.
US received the highest shipments of stainless steel from Canada in January. US imports of stainless steel from Canada increased by 22pc to 9,138mt in January from 7,166mt in January 2019. Stainless steel imports by the US from Mexico, on the other hand, fell by 17pc to 7,704mt from 9,189mt in the previous year.
Stainless steel imports by the US from China decreased by 50pc to 7mt compared to 14mt in January 2019. Imports from Taiwan also dropped by 39pc to 61mt from 100mt in January last year.
