US steel mills shipped 8.536mn nt in January, a 6.4pc increase from the 8.021mn nt in December 2019, and a 5.6pc increase from the 8.080mn nt shipped in January 2019.
The rise in steel shipments in January was the second consecutive month of increases after they rose 4.6pc in December 2019 compared to November. In November 2019, US steel mills shipped 7.665mn nt of steel, a 3.1pc decrease from the 7.914mn nt shipped in October.
Of the total January shipments, when compared with the previous month, hot dipped galvanized sheet and strip rose 13pc, cold rolled sheet increased by 12pc and hot rolled sheets shipments were up 6pc.
In December, shipments of hot rolled sheets increased by 16pc compared with November, cold rolled sheets, were down by 2pc, and hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip, also decreased by 4pc.
Shipments in 2019 increased by 0.9pc to 96.178mn nt compared to 2018 full year shipments of 95.280mn nt according to data provided by the American Iron and Steel Institute.
